Jamini Roy evolved a style of painting that was celebrated as representing the folk and tribal traditions of India. Roy was initially trained in the western academic style (like most of his contemporaries), but, later the cultural revival ideology influenced him to search for a style rooted in his own traditions.
He was greatly influenced by the 'kalighat' and other 'patua' traditions of picture making and invested a vast amount of time in understanding their intricacies, before adapting the elements to create his own distinct personal style.
Prominent eyes, strong dark outlines and flat bright decorative colours are the basic and recurring elements of his compositions.
