At a slightly later date in his illustrious career Jamini Roy explored the theological aspects of Christ, dedicating innumerable versions on the subjects of ‘Nativity’ and 'Crucification' (Crucifixion). This work is a stylized depiction of the latter subject, embellished with an oriental format of design.

An exceptional artist of modern Indian art, Jamini Roy was born in 1887 in a remote village of Bankura in West Bengal. As a child, he used to enjoy spending time among the village potters and learnt to emulate their spontaneous doll-making technique. This was his first initiation into the world of representational arts. His formal training however began at the age of sixteen at the Government School of Art and Craft, Calcutta. While there, Jamini preferred to take lessons in Western style and technique of painting, despite the august presence teachers like Abanindranath Tagore. By the end of his educational stint he accomplished proficiency in anatomical studies of classical nudes in the prevailing academic tradition as well as the handling of oil paints. His questful spirit led him to many directions, as he dabbled with variant pictorial styles after post-Impressionists like Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Rousseu.
