The present work is another impression of the diverse range of stylizations pursued by the artists of Bengal school, in this instance, an artist named Virendra based in Jaipur. By the middle half of 20th century the Bengal school had captured the imagination of the entire nation through the illustrious alumni of Kalabhavan who settled in different parts of India. In this way the ideals of the school continued to be perpetrated into the following generations.
The subject is a utopian articulation of a group of merry making dancers performing under a moonlit sky. As they dance together in orchestrated unison, their body bathed in pale blue light, a moment of pure bliss unfolds that seems to be alienated from all worldly vice. The setting is alludes to the idyllic beauty of ashram life in Santiniketan quite like
Matisse’s “Joy de Vivre.”
