Chandikeshwara was formerly known as Vicharasarman, and was a favoured devotee of Lord Shiva. According to legend, Lord Shiva was pleased with Vicharasarman’s devotion on several instances and appeared to him with his consort Parvati, to make him in charge of his ganas (devotees) as well as the head of his household. He was named Chandikeshwara by Lord Shiva. Chandikeshwara shrines are very popular in south-India.
