Whether forming new grounds for the contemporary sculptors or exploring graphic arts, Somnath Hore was a pioneer. Hailing from Chittagong, now in Bangladesh, he was a visionary moving from medium to medium. He was deeply disturbed by the human inflicted Bengal famine and tried to bring it to the attention of people all around the world, along with other socially committed artists, by doing sketches and drawings of the suffering people.

The significance of his images is astounding because when the revivalists were brooding about a lost past , he was actively engaged in creating images of pain and destruction by the oppressors. His strong reactions on the partition of the country came as the un-healing "wounds" which remained in his individual and also the collective memory of the people for a long time.

He was also a skilled sculptor who had devoted his entire energy in creating art that was critical about the injustices inflicted and was always a partisan supporter of people's movements against it.
