Shobha Broota is one of the most well-regarded contemporary artists alive. Possessed of a deeply creative spirit, she is both a classical singer as well as a painter, earning her Diploma in Fine Art from the College of Art, Delhi. She was married to another respected Indian artist, Rameshwar Broota, her daughter is Pooja Iranna and her son-in-law, GR Iranna, both eminent artists in their own right.
Through her works, Shobha Broota finds a space of meditative stillness, her output ranging for relief work to portraits, paintings and more. Here, a circle of while light seems to pulsate outwards into a blue of profound intensity. The artist's inner journey becomes eminently clear especially through this 1991 acrylic on canvas painting; it is a contemplative work, pushing one into a space of calm stillness, overwhelming yet still somehow peaceful. It could be thought of as a parallel to her classical singing, a silent raga in the language of art. One could even liken her oeuvre to those of Raza, as both artists probe similar themes through abstract and deeply spiritual paintings, resulting in works that are filled with a mystical, energetic quality.
