Born in 1946, Shamshad spent most of his childhood in Mumbai with his father - the legendary - M.F. Husain. He studied at the College of Fine Arts in Baroda and later went to the Royal College of Art in London. He held his first solo show in 1968 and in 1983 won the Lalitkala Akademi's National award.
His works are largely figurative, focusing upon individuals and groups in conversation or in action or repose. His images have a graphic sensibility and there is an emphasis on the gestures and emotions of the characters.
