Ramkinkar Baij was a radical artist who never gave up his personal search for creating a style that was historically grounded and spoke about the cultural traits of the people he lived with. When at Shantiniketan, he was directed towards creating an indigenous nationalist style which he rejected outright as 'essentialist approaches towards history' and created a style which took freely from western avant-garde movements.
His derivations were not just a copy of the western masters but were grounded in his own traditions and valorized the working classes. He was one artist who understood the necessities of creating a style which would be radically in contradiction with the then existing upper caste, upper middle class domination of the cultural scene in India. The strong lines characterize the energy invested by him to define the forms and thereby the essence. He was the first artist on the Indian sub-continent to engage himself in making sculptures for public spaces.
