A LARGE MINIATURE PAINTING OF RADHA AND KRISHNA, late 19th century, with the bejeweled divine couple framed in an oval composition, dressed in highly ornate textiles that have been executed with great detail, with a heart-shaped halo, emanating golden light, behind them replicating the position of their heads, merging the two individual haloes into one, placed amidst a celestial garden that is abounding with flora and fauna.

Radha and Krishna hold a place of great veneration in Hindu religion. Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, is a supreme lover and one of the most revered Gods among the Hindu pantheon of deities. Many great epics and poems have been written in celebration of love, between him and his beloved Radha that has its manifestation at both a physical, as well as a spiritual level.
Geet Gobinda, a 12th century composition written by Jayadev, is one of the classics, written in Sanskrit language, and was of great importance in the Bhakti Movement. This finely executed painting is probably an expression of the artist from Geet Gobinda.
Myriad animals and birds that include an elegant strutting peacock, fast-footed gazelles halted in their tracks, to cows, rabbits, mice and deer, all gaze smitten and spellbound in admiration of the deities. A luxuriant blue sky is the backdrop, for an arch of clouds having a celestial appearance, and to luxuriant clouds that also symbolizes mountainous backdrop to the palace on the right and temple on the left in the mid-ground. The ground is treated with speckles of white blooms flowering on rich greens.
A fine example of the rich tradition of painting, this miniature of Radha and Krishna exemplifies the dexterity and extraordinary skill of the painter. Dipping into pots of natural dyes with super fine single hair brushes, the painter has detailed to the core in infinitesimal minutiae. Whether it is the lash of the deer’s eye or the tip of a flower bud, they paid great attention to every little feature.
