Raja Ravi Varma set up the Ravi Varma Lithographic Press in Mumbai in 1894. He wished for art to be accessible to all and with that acumen he went about setting up his Ravi Varma Lithographic Press. Through it, he revolutionized the Indian cultural milieu by creating this system of mass reproduction; suddenly art was more prevalent than ever, and the credit went to his maverick mind. Much like he did for his paintings, he also received commissions for lithographs. One such example is the contract he received to create thousands of copies of cards for occasions such as Christmas in 1899 (Parsram Mangharam, Raja Ravi Varma - The Painter Prince, pg 25, 2007). It is significant to note that Ravi Varma's works were initially reproduced en-masse as chromolithographs and then as postcards.
