Rebel by nature, R.B. Bhaskaran was one amongst the first to voice against the indigenous trend propagated by K.C.S. Panicker. For him Indianness is what implicates him and his understanding of life around. He feels that each and every brush stroke that he marks carries that implication and that is what contextualizes what is Indian.
All through his artistic oeuvre, Bhaskaran has daringly jumped from one subject to another and duly tried to revise the western genres like still life, portraits etc. His famed 'cat' series has become a signature of the artist in India and the West. The cats in Bhaskaran's paintings become mythical and mysterious. They are always in strain: twisted, pulled and elongated, staring at the onlookers. His other series on marriage portraits is also noteworthy and has earned him appreciation from all quarters.
The usage of strong graphic sensibility and luminous colours and dots make him a decorative and at the same time a mystical prodigious artist.
