"No doubt it was possible, as, among his favourite subjects during his 'landscape' phase, were the fisher folk of Versova engaged in their activities in the gleaming sunshine" - Ratan Parimoo (published, Lalit Kala Akademi 3, 7th March 1991). The same sentiment is echoed by his son Padmanabh Bendre. "The subject may have been inspired from Mumbai's Versova beach in the 1940s."
This oil work is a lovely depiction of two traditional fishing boats. It offers a sense of peace and a glimpse at the freedom the fisher folk enjoy. While there are no subjects, the twin boats are painted with care, where their simplicity is depicted in a loving application of colour in an impressionistic technique. The play of light and shadow is masterful, with the insides of the boats glowing luminously.
