Princess Victoria Gowramma of Coorg

Princess Victoria Gowramma (1841- 1864) was born in Benares, where her father, Chikka Veerarajendra, the last raja of erstwhile Coorg, was exiled to Benares by the British in 1834. Chikka Veerarajendra used the pretext of his daughter embracing Christianity and acquiring a Western education, as a ruse to secure permission to visit England, in an attempt to reclaim the wealth the British took from him. They were the first Indian royals to visit England in 1852, where they spent the rest of their lives. When they were presented to Queen Victoria, the Queen was instantly taken by the princess and took her under her wing. Victoria, along with her royal consort, Prince Albert, was present at the baptism of the Princess. The Princess was given the named Victoria Gowramma, after the Queen, who became her Godmother. Victoria Gowramma married Colonel John Campbell, who had served in the Indian army, and they had a daughter, Edith. She died of tubercolosis three years later at the young age of 23.
