GREAT BRITISH REGIMENTS, 52 HALLMARKED SILVER MEDALS & INSIGNIA SET, by The Birmingham Mint
This superb set contains 52 Sterling silver medals along with their corresponding regimental insignia (cap badges) silver plate, gilt and enamels. The medals are all struck with mirror finish backgrounds and frosted reliefs. They are all in Proof FDC condition, a few with light toning. Each medal commemorates one of the 52 original British Army Regiments of the Line. The reverse of each medal depicts a famous battle, action or heroic deed by the Regiment. The scenes depicted range from the 1689 Battle of Walcourt, including other famous battles during The American War of Independence, The Seven Years War, The Napoleonic Wars, The Crimea, The Zulu War, The Boer Wars, WWI, etc right up to the 1944 Battle for Arnhem during WWII. The obverse of each medal gives the details of the regiment depicted in action on the reverse, along with the war, battle, date and place. Each medal is hallmarked Sterling silver on its edge and all were assayed at the Birmingham Assay Office. The insignia are exact reproductions of the regimental insignia worn by the 52 Regiments, as by 1980 The Birmingham Mint had been producing military insignia for nearly two hundred years. The medals and insignia are displayed on two wooden trays, which are housed in a military style wooden case. The case is in very good condition and has brass edge protectors, side handles, a working lock and key. The Birmingham Mint issued only 3000 of these sets and many have since been split up and sold piece by piece.
The medals are struck in .925 Sterling silver.
