A Qashqai or Luri Kilim, Southwest Persia, early 20th C. A beautiful large kilim woven by the Qashqai or Luri tribes from the Zagros mountains area of Southwest Persia. The deep brick red field is filled with randomly scattered crabs and lozenges. A multiple four border system provides a sense of order to the otherwise naive field compostion. Two borders are filled with the serpent S icons, surrounding the major third border which includes hexagons containing stylized stick figures. The outer surround border includes trefoil symbols meant to trick the eye. The top and bottom ends include extra skirts drawn with tuning forks.
