A Kazak ‘Tree of Life’ Rug, Southwest Caucasus, late 19th C to early 20th C. A highly desirable and rare rug, possibly woven by the Kurds. Very tribal feel with stylized animals and various naïve filler elements. Supple and floppy handle, almost like a heavy blanket. The shaded brick-red field scattered with angular flowering vine, geometric motifs, animals and human figures around horizontal rows of angular tree of life design together with ivory and light blue panels containing angular flowerheads issuing arrowheads in a grey blue stylised cross motif together with flowerhead border between ivory angular vine meander, barber-pole and plain outer stripes.
