A Julkhyr Rug, Uzbekistan or North Afghanistan (Central Asia), late 19th C. A highly abstract and unusual Uzbek Julkhyr (representing “bearskin”) rug from Central Asia. The piece is composed of long strips, two dark indigo blue outer strips, two madder red strips and a central yellow/gold strip. Tri-coloured rugs of this archaic type are few and far between. The strips are woven and then dip dyed, and subsequently sewn together to make these utilitarian rugs that rarely make it to the commercial market.
