A Gabbeh Luri Rug, Southwest Persia, late 19th C. A rare old southwest Persian gabbeh (Farsi word meaning “unclipped”) rug, most likely woven by the Luri tribe of the Zagros mountains area. Four irregular serrated edge diamond medallions comprise the central axis on a heavily abrashed indigo field, each medallion including what appears to be a large crab like element. A few scattered elements are randomly strewn on the remaining field. Three narrow borders frame the composition a mountain peak, a barber–pole, and a middle border including quartered diamonds.
